Describe the elements of the defense of entrapment and the types of police activity that are not considered entrapment. Next, decide whether or not the following situation constitutes entrapment and why: Matt is a small business owner. Because of his friendship with Jerry, who the police believed to be a criminal, the police approached Matt to bribe a fictional city official. At first, Matt refused to engage in such an activity. However, he changed his mind and called the officer back in an hour saying that he was willing to bribe the city official if it would give a good boost to his business. Matt wrote a check for $5,000 and gave it to the undercover officer. He was immediately arrested for conspiracy to commit bribery. At trial, Matt took the defense of entrapment. Will Matt succeed?
