Choose an issue related to free speech, such as pornography, protest zones on campuses, hate speech, or another relevant issue.

Your Special Project for Lesson 4 is to complete a “Creative Controversy”.  A creative controversy has 4 steps outlined below.  For this project, use the issue of free speech.  Choose an issue related to free speech, such as pornography, protest zones on campuses, hate speech, or another relevant issue.  This issue is related to the “Critical Thinking Issue” at the end of the chapter.  Find a short article arguing for little or no limitations on the issue you chose related to free speech and find an article arguing for limitations to your selected issue of free speech.  The Library’s database, “Opposing Viewpoints,” is a great resource. Your written project will include the following:
1.  An outline for the argument.
2.   An outline of the argument against.
3.  An outline of your personal argument.  Draw upon the strongest arguments made in each article to form your personal argument.
4.  A written consensus statement.  This will imagine what could be agreed upon if two persons from opposite sides sat down and had to come up with 5 things to agree upon.  You could even play this out with a friend since conversation helps in coming to a consensus.  What could those 5 things be? A consensus usually digs down into the principles underlying a particular issue.
All can be summarized in bullet points, using complete sentences, or in paragraph form.  Be sure to cite your sources as you draw upon them to complete the assignment. Must draw on at least 2 scholarly sources.

What one thing would you like to improve in your communication style?

You will complete one Forum for each Lesson.  Each Forum will be worth 30 points.  You will receive 20 points for your original forum post and 5 points each for your two peer posts.  For the original post, I expect two good paragraphs, a good paragraph being 8-12 sentences with unity, coherence, and authentic reflection.  Your two peer posts should be one good paragraph each.
Assignment Directions:
In this forum, discuss some weaknesses and strengths you possess as a communicator and as a critical thinker.
First, discuss the way and style that you communicate with people. Do a little analysis of your communication style and talk about the successful things for you in the way you communicate and also some of the shortcomings that occur with your particular style. What one thing would you like to improve in your communication style?
Finally, consider your strengths and weaknesses as a critical thinker.  Use the “Cognitive and Perceptual Errors in Thinking” (pages 119-129) and the “Social Errors and Biases” (pages 130-134) sections of the text to inform your response.  What areas are your strengths and in what areas do you need to improve?
For “A” work in your Forum, did you:
Write two full paragraphs (a full section being at least 8-12 sentences) for your original post.
Write one full paragraph for each of your two peer replies.
Proofread your writing to make sure it is unified and coherent.
Revise your writing to make sure it is free of grammatical errors that detract and distract from your ideas and thoughts.
Respond with sincerity and civility.
Speak from an authentic and interesting voice.

Considering aristotle’s virtue theory and hursthouse’s application of that theory, explain what a virtuous person would think, feel, and do in the following case:

After reading Aristotle’s “Nicomachean Ethics” and Hursthouse’s “Virtue Theory and Abortion”, as well as the other material provided in this unit, write a 3-4 page es.say in which you do all of the following:
Considering Aristotle’s virtue theory and Hursthouse’s application of that theory, explain what a virtuous person would think, feel, and do in the following case:
Case 12 of Regional Ethics Bowl cases 2022
You can decide which specific person you will be evaluating in this scenario (e.g. person seeking abortion, lawmaker, medical professional).

Explain the logic of the principle of causality (to the best of your ability) which is one of the 12 basic first principles of knowledge.

1. Explain in detail, using the information in the textbooks and powerpoints, but also in your own words–the Four Arguments for the Existence of God–Cosmological, Teleological, Ontological, and Moral. Use any examples that may illustrate that you understand the differences. Which argument “speaks” to you as the easiest to use to defend God’s existence? What are your thoughts on the Ontological Argument? (my favorite) Here is an article that may help with Ontological:

2. The Principle of Causality is very important when defending the existence of God with the Cosmological Argument. Explain the logic of the Principle of Causality (to the best of your ability) which is one of the 12 Basic First Principles of Knowledge. (It may help to first define what First Principles are–the Appendix in Geisler has more info; there is also an article in files)
This article may also help explain its importance more simply:

Is God Real? How the Principle of Causality Points to the Existence of God
