Susan owns a mid-sized business with ~500 employees. She takes pride in offering employment opportunity to a diverse range of individuals and valuing their education and experience. An employee has claimed that the company pays lower salaries to minority groups. Susan’s analyst who was working on the data analysis for her board presentation on this matter was upset and resigned over the weekend.
The analyst calculated a $5700 difference (~21%) in compensation between the average minority group employee relative to the average employee. The basic data has been reliably pulled from the ERP system. The analyst has left some sparse notes about the variables he calculated the overall averages. You should verify the analysts work and may need to correct errors. See attached.
You have 4 hours to help Susan. You need to provide her with:
A memo (1-2 pages, pdf format best) addressing, at a minimum:
Is the firm systematically underpaying minority employee groups? Explain any differences in your answer from the analyst.
Does the data support Susan’s intuition that the firm values the education and experience of its employees? Does the data suggest 1-2 other systematic trends that are relevant for Susan? Make (data-supported) recommendations appropriate for the salary policy of this firm.
To generate your next engagement with Susan, list 1-2 other hypotheses about salary policy you could help her test in the future (after board presentation). You just need to list the hypotheses and the data required – I don’t expect you to find the data or run the actual regressions.

-Data Dashboard – best example is Business Intelligence Tools : https://powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/
-A form with Lookup Functions – these may be live clicks or hyperlinks to other data, other spreadsheets, etc.
-At least one MACRO function – a basic MACRO function may be a “button” that brings the discussion to another data page or source.
This “Rough Draft” is recognizably a work-in-progress – a presentation that helps organize and work toward the final presentation. The Excel workbook will be used as the base to build your presentation. You will use it as a basis to tell a story about your data. Potential Outline for the Presentation:
-Cover Slide
Agenda Slide (table of contents if you will – what will you be discussing?)
-One slide for each visualization/lookup function, macro, etc… (Approximately 12-15)
-Closing slide (wrap up your presentation, tell them what you told them, and discuss any future potential data analysis that may develop from this presentation.
-Questions slide (Any questions? Provide contact info for those viewing the presentation later)
-References slide (List in APA format – at least 4-5 scholarly references, one should be your textbook)

1. Introduction and background of problem, source(s) of data set(s), how you collected the data, description of data set(s) and description of variables used to answer the problem statement. You may create a table with variable names and their description or include the variable names and description as bullet points. You are also expected to use some theoretical background or information systems research theory for the research questions (although not required but recommended, may use library resources or Google scholar to search for information systems theories). (minimum 2 pages, no maximum limit).
2.Description of technique applied to the data set(s) to answer the questions / problems. You may use any of the technique(s) we covered in the class or may also use a data analytic technique(s) from outside the syllabus as long as you have proper understanding of the technique and can justify its usage to solving the problem (minimum 2 pages, no maximum limit). You may also use a combination of supervised and unsupervised techniques as well. For example, clustering followed by linear regression. Also, you may use more than one data source/data set, to propose research question(s) and analyze the data set(s)to find answer(s) to proposed research question(s).
3. Results and interpretation of results. You must include some graphs, figures, Excel/R outputs here. You are not required to include detailed Excel steps or R programming code in this section. You are expected to explain your results (whether they support the research question(s) or not), based on the chosen theory/theories. (minimum 1 page, no maximum limit).
