Schools & Delinquency
Carefully watch and analyze the guest presentation posted on Blackboard related to your topic:
CCPD Sr. Officer Austin Jochec, Investigator, Gang Unit
Guadalupe Leal, Regional Supervisor, Attorney General’s Office on Child Support
Principal Enrique Vela, Moody High School
Format for your report:
1)  Begin by providing an overview of the topic you choose (Gangs & Delinquency, Schools & Delinquency, or Family & Delinquency).  Base your overview on recent scholarly research on the subject.  Cite at least 2 scholarly sources (not magazines, newspapers).  All quoted material must be in quotation marks followed by the last name of the author and the year of publication in parentheses, for example, According to Jones, “Gangs are widespread in the U.S., particularly in large urban areas such as Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, and Houston” (Jones, 2020). This section of the paper should be a minimum of 1 page in length.
2)  Provide a detailed, accurate description of the guest presentation. This section of the paper should be a minimum of 2 pages in length.  Do not copy directly from speaker’s PowerPoint slides.  Put info into your own words.
3)  Provide an in-depth analysis of your impressions, thoughts, and feelings engendered by the presentation.  What did you find most compelling, surprising, informative, shocking about the presentation?  This section of the paper should be a minimum of 1 page in length.
4)  Cite research sources for section 1 of your paper.  A reference list contains the actual sources used in writing your paper.  These are the ones you used for quotes and ideas that were taken from articles.  For how to do a reference page, see the style you prefer: MLA, APA, or Chicago style.
This paper will help students develop the important professional skills of:
Preparing clear, factual descriptions of scholarly literature on problems and challenges related to delinquency in American society.
Preparing clear, factual descriptions of guest presentations/events.
Distinguishing your personal feelings, thoughts, prejudices, and concerns from accurate presentation of facts and findings.
Providing reference information in standard format.
In fairness to fellow classmates, late papers will not receive full credit – 10 points off for each day late.  Use headings and paragraphs to help the reader distinguish between the different sections of your paper.  For example:
Overview of the Topic (based on scholarly research – 1 page minimum)
Factual Description of the Guest Presentation (2 page minimum)
My Thoughts & Feelings (1 page minimum)
Please do not use headings and triple spacing to simply fill up your minimum page requirement. Give the assignment your ALL.  I know you can be counted on to do your very best.
Avoiding Plagiarism
Plagiarism is the presentation of another person’s work as one’s own.  All quoted material from an article, must be put in quotation marks followed by the author’s name, year of publication (Jones, 2020).  The “McClellan Rule” is that if you use more than 3 words from someone’s sentence, they must be put in quotation marks.  The full bibliographical information on your source should be included in your reference page at the end of the paper.  Rely on scholarly articles, not popular magazines or social media or your textbook for section one of your paper.

What were the majority of weapons used in homicides-suicides?

The response must be a minimum of 150 words and a minimum of 2 references.
Textbook-Territo, L., & Sewell, J.D. (2019). Stress management in law enforcement (4th ed.). Durham, NC: Carolina Academic Press. ISBN: 9781531015756.
Q: Briefly describe the backgrounds of the victims and perpetrators in homicides-suicides.  What were the majority of weapons used in homicides-suicides?  What is one of the major determinates of police suicide?
Victims, Perpetrators in Homicides-Suicides and the Weapons they use
Part of this discussion aims to describe the victims and perpetrators of homicides-suicides and the weapons most commonly used to carry out the event.  In addition, there will be a discussion about the significant factors of police suicide.  Homicides-suicides create a devastating ripple effect in families and the community.  A point to consider in homicide-suicide cases is that most police agencies in the U.S. investigate them as a crime.  To better understand the homicide-suicide, it will be helpful to understand the background or nature of the perpetrator and the victim.  First, the perpetrators can be separated into three primary age categories, 18-44, 45-59, and 60 plus (Salari & Sillito, 2016).  The perpetrators were predominantly men who use a firearm to commit the act.  The firearms used in homicide-suicide events include handguns to long guns, with the primary type being handguns used to accomplish the event.  Perpetrators of homicide-suicide do not match the perceived understanding of someone capable of committing this unthinkable act.  Those who commit this crime are more likely to be unassuming males and not raging homicidal maniacs, some believe.  They tend to be more educated, employed, and usually triggered into the event because of some situational crises.  The usual red flags for some that commit a homicide, such as prior criminal history, substance abuse, family discord, and mental health issues, do not usually apply to homicide-suicide perpetrators.  Examining the subject of homicide-suicide and conflating it with homicide or suicide alone is problematic.  Homicide-suicide is a unique event, as posited by some of the available research findings.
A Major Cause of Police Suicides
Research conducted by the Centers for Disease Control determined police officers had a 69% greater risk for suicide than the general U.S. population, and police officers who were military veterans had an even higher risk of suicide than those with only law enforcement experience (Territo & Sewell, 2019).   Some research found that officers who did not perceive traumatic event exposure as manageable had a greater risk of suicide.  In addition, some research supports a domino effect of suicide ideology from exposure to traumatic events that leads to PTSD, which leads to substance abuse, usually alcohol, which ends with suicide ideology.
Biblical Perspective
This discussion has examined the perpetrators and victims of homicide-suicide and a significant determinant of police suicide.  In times of hopelessness, the Bible can provide guidance and insight into how to cope with these issues.  Psalm 34:17-18, New International Version (1973/2011) says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles.  The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”  The Bible also talks about taking another life in 1 John 3:12, which says, “Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother.  And why did he murder him?  Because his own actions were evil and his brother’s were righteous.”

How did the killer select his or her victims?

Serial Killers
For this assignment you will review a serial killer’s case in depth. The killer you choose to review will also be the subject of your Week 5 final assignment, so keep your research material handy.
First, choose one of the following serial killers:
David Berkowitz (“Son of Sam”) taunted police over a year and shot 15 people (6 died) in New York City. The movie “Summer of Sam” was about this time.
Gary Ridgway (the “Green River Killer”) holds the American record for most victims. He confessed to killing 48 over a 16-year period but is suspected of having killed many more!
Wayne B. Williams is believed to be the killer of 24 children and young men in Atlanta, though there is still some doubt.
John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo were the “DC snipers” who shot 13 people (ten died) over three weeks in the Washington DC area in 2002.
Ted Bundy: Confessed to almost 30 murders (there may have been more). He was known for being smart and good-looking, and acted as his own lawyer.
Jeffrey Dahmer: His case captured worldwide attention after his capture, mostly due to his habit of keeping parts of his victims long after their deaths, as well as cannibalism and necrophilia.
Kristen Gilbert: An example of a female serial killer, she was a nurse who killed hospital patients in her care.
For this assignment, create a report in Microsoft Word that covers the following points:
Summarize the case: time period, location, number of victims, etc.
Describe the killer’s background, methods, and area of operation.
How did the killer select his or her victims? Was there anything that the victims did to provoke the killer?
By analyzing all of the above information, you should now be able to propose a three-part typology and explain your analysis. Your typology should describe the killer’s motivation, location, and organized or disorganized factors. For instance, John Wayne Gacy might be described as a Power/Control, local, organized killer.

Identify best practices used by police supervisors to ensure that officers are performing professionally and within department guidelines.

For this assignment, keep in mind that for law enforcement agencies to be successful in the future, it is more important than ever for municipalities and departments to identify, recruit, and employ a well-trained and professional police force. From making arrests, to using proper force, to understanding technological devices, to dealing with individuals with mental issues, police officers are increasingly performing many different roles. And in their efforts to provide its citizens with a properly trained and professional police force, municipalities need to know that officers are adhering to their training and operating under established policies and procedures.
Write a 6–7 page paper in which you answer the following questions:
Identify the best practices being employed by law enforcement agencies in the United States to attract and hire those candidates who will be successful in meeting the demands of police officers in the changing future.
Identify the skills that need to be imparted upon recruits during their training in order for them to be successful in all roles of law enforcement. What additional training and/or changes would you recommend?
Identify how police academies are preparing police recruits for the various duties and assignments that they will be responsible for in turbulent and changing conditions.
Identify five constraints placed on police officers and examine how these constraints affect how officers conduct their operations and perform their duties.
Identify best practices used by police supervisors to ensure that officers are performing professionally and within department guidelines. Also identify best practices utilized by supervisors when officers are found to be in violation of their oath, training, and organizational rules.
Use at least four quality sources for this assignment.
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
Be typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides.
Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.

Write a three- to four-page analysis of this case study in which you:

The Fourth Amendment is one of the cornerstones of our freedoms guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution. It protects people against unreasonable search and seizure of their person, property, and belongings. Law enforcement officers must work to ensure they do not violate the Fourth Amendment while performing their duties. They have a responsibility to protect people’s rights and not invalidate evidence for any future court cases.
In this assignment, you will analyze a case study based on an actual case to determine whether police officers’ search and seizure actions related to suspected illegal drug activities were constitutional. Here is the case study you will analyze in your assignment.
Case Study
In the Los Angeles Brentwood neighborhood, neighbors have notified the police that they have seen vehicles coming and going from one specific home. The incidents occur between 11:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. The neighbors believe drug activity may be taking place. The local police division assigns officers Williams and Martinez to investigate possible drug activity at that location.
Officer Williams contacts the neighborhood’s regular trash collection service and asks it to put the contents of the subject’s (defendant’s) garbage left at the curb in plastic bags so as to not mix the subject’s garbage with others. He also asked the trash collector to turn the subject’s bags over to him at the end of trash day collections. The trash collector did as Officer Williams requested. Officer Williams’s partner, Officer Martinez, searched through the garbage and found items indicative of narcotics use. Officer Williams and Officer Martinez then listed the information obtained from the trash in an affidavit to support a warrant to search the defendant’s home. Officer Martinez and Officer Williams encountered the defendant at the house later that day upon execution of the warrant. The officers found quantities of cocaine and heroin during the search and arrested the defendant on felony narcotics charges.
Note: It will be helpful to you to read the actual case on which this case study is based: California v. Greenwood.
Write a three- to four-page analysis of this case study in which you:
Explain in your own words the Fourth Amendment, which governs the officers’ actions.
Determine which of the following doctrines apply to this case study: plain view, abandonment, open fields, or border searches.
Be sure to support your determination by citing specific case law and/or contemporary cases.
Assess the constitutionality of the officers’ actions in the case study.
Use three sources to support your writing.

Choose sources that are credible, relevant, and appropriate.
Cite each source listed on your source page at least one time within your assignment.
