You have a friend who gets incredibly anxious at parties and drinks a lot before and at the party to cope with the anxiety. S/he would like to overcome this social anxiety. Design a “systematic desensitization”/hierarchy of anxiety program for your friend, with five steps or stages. And no using alcohol to loosen your friend up!
PLEASE REPLY TO THE FOLLOWING- Replies are 75 words each.
Systematic desensitization is a cognitive behavioral therapy used to reduce anxiety to stimuli. It works by exposing the subject to the fear over a series of time through a planned exposure to the stimuli with your therapist. The exposure can be real, imaginary etc. At first stress is increased but over time the theory is that the anxiety/fear to the stimuli will dissipate. Many people handle stress to a stimulus in this case a social situation (party) by changing their conscious reality by drinking or using drugs. If a friend gets anxious prior to a party therefore she/he drinks to cope with the anxiety I would slowly introduce her/him to the stimulus after practicing calming methods and do it in short time slots lengthening the time over every exposure to a party. First we would find a way to relax prior to the party, let’s say its listening their favorite music all the way there, easing their mind and relaxing their senses, then we would enter the parties doorway hear the noise but never go in , next time we would listen to music prior to the party, on the way their knock on the door and enter and leave , next we would listen to music on the way there knock on the door, enter and stay for ten minutes, next we would listen to music on the way there knock on the door and then enter and stay for half an hour, by the fifth time we will stay for the whole party . the object is to relax, support and hopefully the friend will extinct her fear by realizing the stimulus is not fearful at all. This is an example of exposure and repeat.

Anxiety, panic attacks, and phobias can all be managed with systematic desensitization. It involves putting yourself in a bad situation and thinking about it. In the case of my friend, the best strategy for overcoming her social anxiety would be to first comprehend how the trigger affects her and then employ relaxation techniques to reduce the body’s overall response to the trigger. Prior engaging in systematic desensitization exercises, she must have mastered relaxation techniques by creating a list of most feared situations in a hierarchy meaning from least to most feared. Her least fear might be getting ready for the party, while her greatest fear might be being on the dance floor at the party in the middle of the crowd. Her anxiety might get worse as she gets ready to go to the party. First, by keeping her eyes closed, she can picture herself leaving her house. She will experience anxiety once more, this time in a stronger form, as she imagines herself in this circumstance, she can regain a sense of calm by practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing. She will need to walk those steps several times a day until she can picture herself dressing up for the party, leaving her house, and not needing to drink to relax. Now she can visualize herself reaching the party and standing at the door, using the same relaxation technique she learned to combat anxiety. Then she can move up the ladder of fear by walking herself into the party and getting further away from the door after mastering these steps. She should keep picturing those scenes until she can effectively manage her anxiety. Imagining herself standing on the dance floor full of people and using relaxation techniques to combat her anxiety just like she did in previous steps, prepares her to face her most terrifying situation. She is now ready to try the exercise in real life, starting with getting ready at her house, once she is comfortable with all these steps. She gradually becomes desensitized to the various party-going triggers that cause anxiety as a result of this exercise. Lastly, if she still has trouble relaxing, she can talk to a professional who can help her overcome her anxiety, emotional issues, and get back to her previous level of functioning. They can also help her overcome her fears and relax.
