General Guidance
Your assignment should be word processed (handwritten
assignments are not accepted), using time new roman size 12 font, double
spaced, with numbered pages and your student number printed as a footer on
every page. The word limits stated for
this assignment excludes the reference list at the end of the assignment but
includes all text in the main body of the assignment (including direct
quotations, in-text citations, footnotes, tables, diagrams and graphs). Please be aware that exceeding the word count
limit will affect the academic judgement of the piece of work and may result in
the award of a lower mark. Appendices
are not considered a supplement, and thus, will not be assessed as part of the
content of the assignment. As such, they will not contribute to the grade
awarded, however it may be appropriate to use an Appendices section for any
material which is a useful reference for the reader. Please note that
appendices are not included in the word count.
The majority of references should come from primary sources (e.g.,
journal articles, conference papers, reports, etc.) although you can also
utilise area specific textbooks. You must ensure that you use the Harvard style
of referencing. Please indicate the word count length at the end of your
assignment.

module, the student should be able to:
1. Synthesise material from various sources in order to
identify, define and defend an appropriate research question
2. Apply methodological rigour in the use of appropriate
methods and techniques for problem analysis and investigation
3. Critically evaluate the implications of research findings
4. Communicate research findings using agreed standards of
convention
Assessment Guidelines
The dissertation
project module offers students an opportunity to explore in-depth an area of
personal or professional interest that relates to their programme of study. In
doing this, they will expand their research skills and apply what they have
learned in the earlier modules to their research project. Students have a
choice of either developing or writing up a secondary or consultation based or
a scoping review-based dissertation of 12- 15,000 words in length excluding
appendices and references. Your work
should include and cover the following sections/aspects and content (as shown
and stated in the table below). The specific percentage marks allocated to each
section/aspect of your work is stated below. Please also note that the Level 7
marking criteria (located towards the end of this assessment brief) will also
be used to reflect this overall grade. Please remember that achievement and
demonstration of both learning outcome 3 is being assessed in this assessment.
1 Title and abstract
• Abstract: 1 page (300-350 words), summary of whole
dissertation. Includes list of key words and word count. (5marks)
2. Introduction, aims and objectives (Identification of
the problem, description and solution)
• The need for the scoping review justified
• The study placed in a broader context
• The aims and objectives clear and concise: they act as a
useful guide to the scoping review contents
• State the general findings of the review (what most
sources conclude), and comment on availability of sources in the subject area (10marks)
3. Methodology
• The review approach described and justified
• The process for the review transparent and systematic
• The review
question(s) clearly articulated
• The search strategy adequately described and is appropriate
• An appropriate rationale provided for the sources of
evidence searched
• The status of grey literature in the review adequately
discussed
• Inclusion and exclusion criteria provided and justified
• Process for data extraction and charting described
adequately and is appropriate
• Clear demonstration
of how you got to your final articles to be included in the review
• Search strategy shown by using a flow diagram i.e., number
of hits, exclusions etc.(20marks)
4. Main body
• Data collection tables been provided
• Key concepts (e.g., working definitions or the conceptual
boundaries of a topic) articulated clearly and with purpose
• The results systematically map the literature and provide
a rich description of the extent, range and nature of available research on the
topic
• Provides a discussion of your research and explains and
analyses your results
• Refers back to the publications cited in your literature
review and uses them to support your analysis • Evidence of critical analysis
of the literature (an appropriate level of commentary)

5. Discussion and conclusions
• Gaps in the research evidence identified
• The research implications of the findings adequately and
appropriately discussed
