In this paper, I will analyze how an individual’s identity is enacted on Instagram vs. BeReal (two social media applications). I will discuss the primary features of each application and it’s effect on millennials’ sense of self. I will compare the user experience on the two applications to the way identity has been explored by Erving Goffman in his text “The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life”.
In the information/digital age, the widespread use of the internet has made millennials increasingly dependent on computers, mobile phones, and tablets. This dependence on technology has also increased their usage of social media applications to stay connected with their loved ones. Photos and videos are uploaded constantly to update others on their lives and a well-curated image of one’s self is put out into the world. This “front-stage” image is skewed from the actual reality, which has resulted in negative impacts to their mental health. The comparison and the showcase of your life’s highlights that social media applications promote makes millennials crave constant validation as they try to fit in and not be “stigmatized” by their peers.
To contextualize my analysis I will be using the theories of Goffman who argues that every individual has a “virtual and actual identity”. I will also use Goffman’s idea of how our possessions help in the formation of our identity to explore how Instagram and BeReal promote and/or demote materialism and capitalism. Additionally, I will apply Goffman’s theories of “stigma” to explore how stigmatization on social media affects millennials and their mental health.
In the process of my analysis, I will engage with the dissenting views of the benefits of social media applications in bridging gaps, helping people stay connected, creating communities and enabling people to be their true self.
My paper’s main argument will be that social media applications largely influence the identity of millennials. Through my analysis I will show how Instagram and BeReal promote a false sense of authenticity, which as a result, negatively impacts their mental health and well-being.
This topic matters to human-centered interaction design because designers need to consider the negative implications of their design. Designers have the power to influence and impact human behavior and should be using this power in a positive way, with care and consideration.
