It has been an interesting and intense time in our society. We are uniquely positioned in a time of COVID 19 and also a time of increased division in our country and the targeting of minority groups (think of the racist incidents against black people and more recently Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders).
In order to critically engage in these conversations, in this project, you will make meaningful connections between current issues and literature. Literature allows us a critical lens through which to view sociopolitical issues, and now it’s your turn to provide us with your unique lens!
Prompt:
To do so, you will design a PowerPoint, Google Slideshow, Prezi (or slideshow using another form of software) and choose one of the following options:
Option 1: Choose a literary text that you feel people should read to better understand our social struggles or social justice. The text cannot be anything from our syllabus this semester. You may choose a short story, poem, song, memoir, or novel. Then, you will provide background on the text’s author, articulate the text’s central message, demonstrate close reading of at least 2 significant passages in the text, explain how the text relates to the currently social justice issues, and discuss why people should read it.
The slides must be detailed enough to be able to follow your train of thought on each slide and between slides. You should also include images throughout.
You are also welcome to work with one other person if you’d like. Please let me know via email if you plan to work with a partner.
