Researched Argument Paper
Project goal: For first-year writers to learn how to research a topic and construct an argument
using rhetorical techniques appropriate to the topic/field/audience.
For this essay, you will come up with your own question about writing, reading, literacy, or
learning. Your question should be about something that you are interested in. Maybe it’s
something you’ve wondered about for a while, or just started wondering about as a result of this
class.
Length: 5 pages (minimum).
Audience: Think of an audience beyond your peers. Who would you like to discuss this with?
Other students? People in the valley? Beyond that?
Format: MLA (12 point, Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, double-spaced, two-part title).
Sources: Yourself/possibly interviewing others/field research (observation/notetaking) as well as
incorporating secondary sources into your work (i.e. texts/artifacts that you are analyzing).
Considerations: This isn’t a high school project. I want you thinking critically and creating
sophisticated texts on your own.
I’ve attached a rubric as well.
