The Christian’s Responsibility to the Geopolitical World
<
<
It is certainly no secret that the world is becoming more globally connected than it has ever been. Because of this, it only makes sense that Christians should evaluate their responsibility to the geopolitics and reconcile those responsibilities to the mandates of the gospel. According to Jeremy Black in his work Geopolitics and the Quest for Dominance, the term “geopolitics” is an “amorphous concept.”[1] No exact definition has been agreed up, although nearly all scholars agree that it implies a relationship between politics and geographical features. According to researcher Ola Tunander, the term was originally coined by political analysts Rudolf Kjellén and Fredrick Ratzel, who together founded the German geopolitical school.[2] Ratzel actually coined the word lebensraum, although he was never a member of the NAZI Party or a follower of Hitler. Kjellen envisioned a political alliance that was similar to what NATO is today.

The assigned video this week discusses themes in the book City of God by Augustine of Hippo.[3] This insightful work offers the reader a thoughtful view of two cities, one of which is on earth and the other, as Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress calls it, is the “Celestial City” in heaven. Augustine argues that the Christians who live in the earthly city must maintain an eternal perspective. They must keep their eyes on the celestial city and work to bring its values into the tangible world in which they live.

Augustine’s admonishment nicely sums up the responsibility of Christians to the geopolitical world. In many ways, the Christian’s responsibility to their own country is not vastly different from their responsibility to other countries around the globe. In a perfect world, all nations would live in harmony with one another. They would work together to create an enjoyable life for all citizens everywhere. However, the world is far from perfect, and many nations of the world live in a perpetual state of conflict. Many factors contribute to these problems, including cultural, linguistic, and religious barriers. Economic ideologies such as Marxism have also created profound divisions. Because of this, Christians are inadvertently placed in the middle of political struggles. They can choose to take a position and stand for what they believe to be right. However, they might also choose to pray and allow the sovereign Lord to fight the battle. They might also choose to do nothing. Out of these three options, prayer seems to be the logical course of action This is because the Bible states that the Lord is the one who raises up and removes kings. Christians must trust that God is working out his will and way in all circumstances, including those in the geopolitical world. The Bible states in 1 Timothy 2:1-2, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.” While it may seem a little cliché to pray for world peace, it sounds like that is exactly what believers are instructed to do. While it may not be realized this side of heaven, it is certainly something to look forward to.
